My thoughts wandered off once again to my encounter the previous evening at Maastricht Debates with the two guest speakers of the event, Mrs Luisa Diogo, the former Prime Minister of Mozambique, and Mrs Sylvia Borren, the co-chairman of the World Connectors think tank and former director of Dutch aid organisation Oxfam Novib.

Ask anyone and they'll tell you: the Netherlands is flat, flat as a pancake. But take a closer look and you'll see that the Netherlands also has its slopes. The highest peak is the Vaalserberg in the south, which rises 322 metres into the air.

Abdullah al-Mansouri (1945) was a professional soldier in Iran, but he deserted during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. He took refuge in Maastricht in the Netherlands and became a Dutch citizen.
