Europe Direct Maastricht and Centre Céramique present:

“Over de grens” “Over the border” “Uber die Grenze”

A visual document of the Dutch borders, post-Schengen, by Scottish designer-artist Iain Aitchison.

On 21st December 2007, the nine EU ascension states of Eastern Europe and Malta joined the Schengen Area, thereby removing the last obstacles to passport-free travel within the EU and eliminating border controls between all but three EU nations.

In May 2007, in advance of this historic occurrence, Scottish researcher, designer and artist Iain Aitchison, embarked on a journey along the border of the The Netherlands, itself a signatory to the original Schengen Convention in 1990, documenting the 11 major crossings that span its 1027 kilometre length.

As an archaeology of the present ‘Over the Border’ is an on-going attempt to document the fate of the EU’s internal borders, post-Schengen. It is hoped that the project will serve both as a visual archive of their present state and as a stimulus for discussion into their future role in a post-territorial Europe.

The exhibition is presented in German, English and Dutch and includes texts in Dutch about ‘Borders and the EU’.

The artist Iain Aitchison will be in attendance at the opening of the exhibtion on Saturday 2 August 2008, from 1.30 pm till 2.15 pm.
